CHAPTER 31
I t felt like an eternity by the time we reached his cab. I must have asked at least five times; “How much more do we have to walk to get to your cab?”
He kept smiling at me and he gave the same response every single time. “One minute.”
The one minute turned out to be six minutes in reality for us to get to his cab. The humidity was killing me, I started dripping in sweat. To me, it seemed like a herculean effort to cross the road inside the terminal to get to his cab. Whoever says crossing in NY is difficult must have never visited India. It was terrifying, I almost got run over multiple times. When I crossed the road, thinking the cars would stop for me, I got honked and drivers started screaming at me. I couldn’t make out what they were saying but I could make out it was nothing pleasant. Thanks to the cab driver, for holding my hand and helping me cross the road.
I couldn’t wait to get in to the backseat of the cab as the taxi driver placed my luggage in the trunk of the cab. When the taxi driver took his seat, I leaned across and thanked him for helping me out. The cab driver looked surprised with me thanking him and he said, “No mention madam.”
I leaned back as I emptied the water bottle I had with me. The water has never tasted this sweet and soft as it flowed through my throat in to my body. I sighed a relief as the cool air from the air conditioner struck my body. Given the situation, it felt like an ocean breeze caressing my body.
The taxi driver was taken aback and looked surprised hearing my destination. After a brief moment he asked with a bewildered tone, “Police Station?”
I nodded yes and said, “Velachery Police Station.”
I must have bungled the name of the place as he looked confused. I tried repeating slowly, “Velachery” and each time, his face looked lost.
Finally, I remembered the printout in my handbag. I rifled my handbag for it and for a moment, I was shocked not to find it. I sighed a relief as I found it hiding behind my immigration papers.
The driver looked at the printout I handed to him and said, “Madam no reading English.”
I understood what the driver meant, and I pointed to the name of the police station. I thanked my lucky stars, when the driver started nodding rapidly to indicate he knows the place.
“Velachery, I know,” he smiled.
“How long?”
The driver responded quickly. “Hmm, 10 kilometers madam.”
I was confused, he responded how far rather than how long. I rephrased and asked again, “How much time will it take to reach the police station?”
“45 minutes.”
It looked like someone cut us off and the driver started to yell at the culprit, a motorcyclist. My mind started feeling anxious thinking about what should I say in the police station. I have never done anything like it before.
